Art as Entertainment

I was talking to man today who is in the advertising biz, and he told me his idea of how art, all art, is actually in the entertainment field — whether or not artists know it or like it.

He used the example of musicians that want to play only classical, but in order to make money, play Pops! concerts along the way. Sometimes, to just make money, you have to do things like have a full-time job, work as a graphic designer or do production art (even for your own work: make more than one piece of something that is a popular seller.) The classical musician might think there is a difference between the (in a loose sense) the sacred and secular concert, but the marketing person sees the same goal: to sell tickets.

Marketing is not something that most artists want to think about or are equipped to do. It’s a big job to focus on your art alone and do it well.

This man also told me that if he buys art it is because he liked it, because it entertained him to buy it and own it.

Just an interesting thought today. If anyone comes across my blog, I’d like to know your thoughts...
